TRANSFORM AND RESTRUCTURE

Illustration

The first step of the project was to choose a packaging that was interesting in terms of shape, color, aesthetics, functionality. So I collected many boxes from various places like the canteen, construction lab and few boxes lying around my house. I started sketching all the boxes from different angles. I was looking for packaging with unique flaps or few cutouts. While sketching I paid attention to the form and structure of the packaging. To dive in deeper I started dismantling all the packaging to study their initial shape.

I was about to choose this, but this did not have any slit. It just had an extra panel (the center divider).

FINAL DRAPE

For my final iteration, I scaled up the actual pattern 5 times to achieve the desired length and breadth. At first, it was really confusing to replicate the miniature exploration in an enormous piece of fabric. The miniature that I selected had very simple folds but there was no excess fabric. But, while upsizing it I had much excess fabric. So, I pleated the excess fabric. In the end, I realized the final was completed different from my initial starting point.

The next task was to explore few techniques such as shirring, ruching, gathering, folding, and a lot more to create a 3d garment. The garment should reflect our learning about various techniques and how to incorporate the techniques in a garment.

SUBTRACTION

Silent

SCREAM

An oxymoron is an expression that contains words with opposite meanings. Silent scream for me is a small move that makes a big impact. While converting these words into visual forms I translated the word silent into something that is very subtle, free, soft, whereas I translated the term scream as something which is fierce, angry, sharp, and dark. Mainly I pictured the form to be malleable as silence is not always a positive thing to do it sometimes silence lets you be consumed by others and get hurt easily. On the contrary, I perceive scream to be an expression of anger and a constant need to be heard or be dominant.

spiky

My character's name is "boing boing ". So it can - jump, fly, change form. Basically, I pictured the form to be malleable as - silence is not always a positive thing to do it sometimes silence lets you be consumed by others and get hurt easily. It is transparent and it has a membrane that changes color as per its mood.

SCREAM

My second character's name is "spiky". I perceive scream to be an expression of anger and a constant need to be heard or be dominant. So, I kept the features to be pointy. According to my, a scream is something that gets dominant in darkness or when alone. So, my character glows in the dark but at the same time, it is afraid to be in the light.

To have an idea of the final garment I crossbreed my two characters and ended up creating an inspiration board with the textures that I wanted in my garment.

I started working on my final garment. After, the discussion with my faculty I realized I wasn't really communicating my concept wherein I wanted to show silence as imperfect. So, perfect parallel shirring was contrary to my concept.
